Bad Plan News

Groan

My life hurts.

You ever get like that? That achy feeling that's incredibly non-specific in origin; that total-body discomfort that you spend an hour or so wondering about the cause of? Only to realize that it's based in a complete dissatisfaction with yourself and your life?

Okay...maybe it's only me.

Okay -- first the bad news.

The Plan is no more.

Eric updated their site yesterday and posted a short note (follow that link to read it) about the fact that they're breaking up as "The Dismemberment Plan."

This fucking blows. I am totally depressed.

On to happier news...

I went and saw "Gigantic: a Tale of Two Johns" on Friday night. HOLY CROW! This was an awesome, awesome film, with a great turnout of Giants fans. It struck just the right balance between informing people who might not be rabid fans and those who are, without being a total pandering mess. It was rad. Plenty of music, plenty of the Johns, lots of humor.

There were some great bits — Ira Glass and Sarah Vowell (sp?) from This American Life were especially cool, as were the celebrities reciting lyrics. All in all, it was just classy.

The only oddity for me was seeing the date stamp on one of the live performances: September 10th, 2001. John and John played an in-store gig at a Tower Records in Manhattan. They didn't mention anything about September 11th, which I think is the right choice, but seeing the date so big on the screen, and the crowd of happy folks there to hear some good rock music, not knowing what was going to befall them the next morning, made the whole scene portentous and poignant in a way that was maybe not the best for the film. Or maybe it was best to address it obliquely? Normally I wouldn't care, but it is the Giants — they're pretty inextricably linked to New York as an idea.

At any rate, it is highly recommended for even the casual They Might Be Giants listener.

Future Listening!

(That's a Towa Tei reference, for all you non-Deee Lite people out there.)

Oh. My. God.

The best show I could ask for out of last year's musical offerings is coming next month! (Yes, yes FlyBoy — even though it's taking me simply forever, you do have a 2002 Best Of CD with your name on it. Really.)

Sparta. (Sparta!)

Glassjaw. (Yay!)

Hot Water Music. (Holy crow!)

All together in a club the size of my freaking thumb!

Swoon.

Okay -- fine. I could tell you all about how it sucks to be me, and I am a horrible person, blar blar blar blar...but you've heard it before, and I'm not up to it today.

I'm thinking about selling all my stuff and buying a bar.
